Our Volunteer Program reflects the early experiences of our founders, who began their own careers as volunteers in Kenyan and Indian orphanages. While volunteering with vulnerable children through various aid organizations, the founders of Flying Kites began to think critically about options for orphaned children, concerned of the repercussions that a poor diet, substandard education and unsustainable handouts would have on such children’s futures. Of most worry to our team were the general views and opinions of foreigners visiting impoverished centers, schools and orphanages, many of whom justified the appalling conditions with an attitude of, “something is better than nothing.”

At the Flying Kites Leadership Academy (FKLA), we hold volunteers to a high standard, and we invite visitors to help us raise the standards of care available to the world’s poorest children.

Our site is located at the foothills of the beautiful Aberdare Mountains, so much of your time, as well as the children's is spent outdoors, taking full advantage of the natural, surrounding beauty.

Volunteers at FKLA are expected to take the initiative. You will not be told what to do or when to do it. We fully expect our volunteers to dive headfirst into daily life at FKLA, but your experience will be what you make it. 

This is an opportunity to bring your skills and hobbies to the table and share them with the incredible children at FKLA. Many of our volunteers are teachers by trade and are able to bring a great deal of experience into the classroom, but former volunteers range greatly in age profession and that is the way we like it!

Volunteers must fill out our application and be interviewed by Volunteer Program staffer. Volunteers must pass a Criminal Background check. Volunteers must commit to spending at least one month at our center. 

Volunteers with a background in education/teaching are highly desirable but it is not required. Previous experience working with children, volunteering, and traveling in developing countries are all recommended. 

The most successful volunteers are people who are open-minded, self-directed, and able to rise to the occasion whenever unexpected challenges occur. 

$300 program fee

Room and board fee of 1500 Kenyan shillings per day. This covers three meals a day and accommodations. 

Volunteers cover their own travel expenses and must provide travel insurance for themselves.
