Travel Insurance

Insure yourself on your volunteering adventure!

Just like at home, you can get in trouble in Africa and be in need of assistance. It is then good to know that you are well insured. Ecomambo offers, in partnership with World Nomads, a specialized travel insurance for people who like to do more than sit on a beach for two weeks. The travel insurance covers you anywhere in the world. In general it also covers more adventurous sports and activities such as scuba diving, horse riding, bush walking and rock climbing. Exactly which adventures World Nomads will and won't cover varies, depending on your country of permanent residence.

Why should I have a travel insurance?

  • The risk of accidents, illness, theft, losing luggage or you accidentally damaging someone belongings is considerable bigger during your stay abroad than when you would have stayed at home.
  • In case of trouble, the chance you need support is also likely to be higher. The costs of staying in a hospital abroad, a rescue mission, or repatriation back home can very quickly rise to huge amounts. Also you have to consider that medical facilities in Africa are not of the standards you are used to.
  • If you suddenly find that you can go volunteering for some unforeseen reason such as illness or a death of a close relative the insurance can cover your costs. Not all insurance policies cover cancellation, so please read the policy wording relevant to you carefully.
  • If you cause an accident when abroad and injure someone, insurance can cover your liability and legal expenses. If someone decides to sue you, you want to be covered.

What isn't covered?

  1. Damage you cause with your rental (or bought abroad) vehicle (car, motor) is never covered. For this you need to get a different liability insurance for vehicles.
  2. A good rule of thumb is to remember that insurance is there for things that might go wrong and will not cover extreme risks such as:

  3. Medical conditions that exist before you travel
  4. You can still take out the insurance for other benefits but you should be aware that costs of treatments that you knew were likely or possible before you travel won't be covered.

  5. Deliberately put your life in danger
  6. Trekking across the arctic in a t-shirt is not conducive to picking up your pension

  7. Involve alcohol or drugs
  8. Apart from the risks that you take while off your face in a place that you aren't familiar with, you probably won't get your claim paid.

  9. HIV or STD's
  10. We know this is a little weird but if you contract STD's or HIV while you are away, these aren't covered. We are working with our insurance partners to review these exclusions.
