Who Is Mzungu? Mzungu Volunteers is a charity working to provide quality volunteer travel opportunities in Uganda. We focus on displaced children, education, and community development in villages and rural areas around Uganda. Mzungu was established to link like-minded travelers looking to make a difference in African villages where the need is greatest in Uganda while at the same time enjoying some thrilling adventure experiences while they are here.
What are Mzungu volunteer programs? Being a tourist is not the only way to travel. By getting involved with the locals you gain a lot more insight and different experiences. Volunteering has become a more and more popular form of spending holidays abroad while learning about life in other countries. Where are volunteer programs available? Volunteer Projects are located in Jinja, Kampala, and Kabale. Please note that the placements location (where you’re going) are among these communities and will be confirmed after receiving your application and we suggest volunteers book well in advance to avoid any problems with your specific requests. You’ll have a lot of work, but it is guaranteed that you are going to have as much fun as well. You’ll work together with other volunteers, who share the same interests as yourself.
Local people are almost always very friendly as they know that you help their community. You will have the chance to make friends for a lifetime from all around the world.While you are here you will have the opportunity to travel around the Pearl of Africa and take in some of this countries amazing beauty; including The Bwindi Impenetrable Forrest, Murchison and Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Bunyoni. What Can you do on a Mzungu Volunteer Program? Become a Volunteer in Kampala, Jinja or Kabale. There are many activities available to you as a volunteer including spending time at a our orphanage taking care of the children, teaching in rural schools, working on building and renovation projects for both schools and safe water, feeding children in a nearby village, and working on farming projects available all year around.
-Orphanage Program : Work with orphans, help and learn from them... Share your experiences by teaching them English and other subjects, play with them and care for them as if they were your own and get to know stories behind your faces. Imagine being their with them, what would you do?... Come be part of this wonderful project.
-Teaching Program : Work with rural villages teaching English and Math, provide an education to these schools and children and give them a future. Many of children will want to learn many things from you, you are of course welcome to get to know them. Many many smiles waiting ahead.
-Building/Renovation Programs: Work in rural villages helping to establish and refurbish schools and water wells for these communities. A hands on program where volunteers take part in building and renovation projects in our rural communities where you work along side members of the community where the project is located.. This work can include projects like the construction and refurbishing of schools, water system installation and also renovation work.
In general, you can do many, many things. Some volunteers have a very clear idea of the skills they bring and the activities they would like to engage in. Others only have a strong desire to help and interact with our people. No matter which category you feel you fall into, we are here to help you get ready to jump in and work on meaningful projects in Uganda.
Requirements / Conditions Who can take on a Mzungu volunteer program? Everyone who has spare time and is fit enough to travel to Uganda can take a this form of vacation. Mzungu Volunteers is receiving people from all countries and from 17yrs and above. The only conditions are an open mind and tolerance on your side. See the possibilities and see what you can do.
If you want to come with your family, group or friends, no problem. Uganda is easy to travel and children are welcome everywhere. Your children can either acompany their parents while they do their volunteer work or have a program on their own if they are old enough. Our projects will provide an unforgettable eye opening experience for a gap year, vacation, spring break or career break for groups and individual travelers.
Accommodation - In Kampala: We have a modern home located 8miles on Gayaza Road on the outskirts of Kampala ( Modern rooms and Camping Available).
- In Jinja: There is a basic home located within the projects area in Lwanda which is 7Kms from Jinja town ( Basic rooms and facilities).
- In Kabale: A traditional home located within the projects area in Katungu which is 15Kms from Kabale town (old fashioned way housing and village life accommodations)
All accommodations have twin rooms and every bed has a mattress and a mosquito net. You will be served breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, all cooked for you by a local mother.

Safety: We take safety of our volunteers seriously and thoroughly arrange everything with our projects before sending volunteers to the community. If we feel a certain area or a project is not safe we postpone the project until all safety concerns can be met. Our volunteers are responsible for securing their own travel and medical insurance before they arrive. How Affordable are We? You give your time and pay a small cost for travel and in return you gain an enhanced exchange of culture, learn new languages, develop friendships, gain new insight of your personal life goals, and discover yourself by testing limits and challenging yourself. Our volunteer programs start at USD$120 for a week with a one-time registration fee of $200.00 at the time of booking but being affordable does not mean we cut back on our quality. Our volunteer housing is safe, comfortable, and inviting. We work hard to provide you with the best quality accommodation and a truly amazing volunteer experience.

Project Dates How Long Can you go for? Flexibility, Unlike some of the volunteer travel organizations around Africa, we allow our volunteers to start on any date of the year and stay as long or as short as they like! The only exception is when Mzungu has a specific project it has generated that has a stated start and stop deadline associated with it. - Apply
