The Gansbaai Communal Sports Program is founded by Grootbos Foundation of South Africa. The FFSA started in January 2008 and in April 2008 they began Gansbaai Communal Sports Program. The project is led by Lean Terblanche and she is mostly found working on the sports field.
This project was founded to give children (that never had the opportunity) the chance to play and enjoy sports. The project uses sport as a tool to teach the children various life skills. Soccer is the main sport and from 2010 netball, hockey, cricket and tennis will also be part of the program. While it is fantastic that the children have the opportunity to take part in all these fun sports there is the added advantage of helping the children with things like: - Learning how to speak English - Learning how to read and write - Hygiene - Aids/HIV - How to treat others.
These subjects are sometimes hard to talk about for the children but the coaches and volunteers make it easier for them by guiding and supporting them. In addition there are also workshops given about important issues of life! These workshops are often given by people from outside the project but volunteers are also welcome to give workshops if they want to.
The project is sponsored by the Premier League. They donated an entire astro turf soccer field. (The first one of it’s kind in South Africa!) The field is centrally located between the white, colored and black areas in Gansbaai. This ideal location encourages social communication between the different groups. The soccer program consists of training 4 days a week for kids from 6 to 19 years with matches on weekends. Training sessions are run by head coach, Sicelo (28yrs), with assistance from volunteers. If the project has spare money, volunteers will also do things like buy soccer clothes. The children then have the opportunity to earn there own clothes by showing effort and commitment to the program.
Role of Volunteer
The project is a non profit organization and therefore is very dependant on volunteers. If you have a back round in sports training, your studies are sport related and/or you love children, this project is ideal for you! The following tasks and activities can be expected: - Admin work - Finance - Reporting - Marketing and fundraising - Coaching and giving training - Setting up educational (sport) programs - Organizing sport clinics or other events. Any fresh ideas are always welcome! As a volunteer you will have a lot of contact with the children and you will be a mentor and a roll model for them. Travelling and weekend trips are definitely a possibility!
How about local guidance? Once the project knows where they can use your specific skills you will be introduced to the people who will offer guidance during your period of volunteer work.
Requirements / Conditions
It’s important that the volunteer considers the following points: - You will have to respect the vision and mission of the project. - Have to be able to work on your own and take responsibility. - Be flexible in terms of tasks and activities that you are requested to do.
And don’t forget: Passion to work with Kids!!!
There is a house in Gansbaai especially for volunteers of this project. According to the availability they have single rooms but mainly sharing rooms. The house is really close to the project so it is not a must to rent a car!! There is also a bus available between Stanford, Gansbaai and Grootbos.
